Whilst you would not experience any negative health effects from overexposure to LED therapy, it is possible to receive less of a benefit, or no benefit at all, if you exceed recommended dosing. A bi-phasic dose response exists in biological systems such that, above a certain threshold, more of a stimulus is no longer beneficial.
Prolonged exposure to regular LED light treatments lead to an overabundance of free radicals, which lead to oxidative stress and start to inhibit the very processes that you are using your red light for. An excess of free radicals from prolonged exposure to LED Therapy would start to inhibit cell regeneration and the production of cellular energy, in the form of ATP.
Therefore, we do not recommend exceeding the recommended treatment time, simply because you would not see any additional benefit and potentially can undo its good work.
Pulsed light, on the other hand, mitigates an over-abundance of free radicals, so the efficacy of your device is extended. Pulsed light produces more ATP and accelerates cell proliferation, giving you more of the dermal fibroblast cells which produce collagen. Whilst you are unlikely to ‘overdo’ your red light treatment with pulsed LED, you also don’t need to do it for as long to receive the same benefit because it is more efficient, so your treatment time can be reduced.
